Sergeant Cluff is a Yorkshireman born and bred. That's why he's convinced that Amy Wright was murdered, despite the medical and police findings that she committed suicide. Cluff knows her husband either killed her or drove her to her death. The weak Wright flees to his mistress for help, which directs Cluff's attention to her - a much stronger character, determined to get her way.
