The Early History of 167 Withens Lane, Wallasey. [electronic resource]

eBook
Once ‘Tales from the Big House’, the story of my childhood home, was in print, I was able to concentrate on this prequel: ‘The Early History of 167 Withens Lane, Liscard, Cheshire’. However, the history of this large, rambling dwelling house now numbered 167A, B, C and D, formerly ‘Inveresk’, formerly ‘The Groves’, together with the now demolished older cottage and outbuildings known as ‘Rose Cottage’, in the garden behind, was not as straightforward to chronicle as you might expect given that I had access to Dad’s extensive bundle of parchment deeds which he secured when he paid off the mortgage. However, although the deeds date back to 1711 it was not until a later schedule, dated 1891, that the name of the house ‘The Groves’ was mentioned, and ‘Rose Cottage’ was not named in them at all.
