Rating: Reviewed by: BRW BLOCKED, 29 Mar 2015Is this really great literature? It's a disjointed tale of nothing at all really. Set in the French Vietnam war, it doesn't evoke much of the very special ambience that Vietnam offers and the plot is paper-thin. The "hero" spends a lot of time smoking opium and chasing after a much younger Vietnamese girl. This novel may have a passing interest if you have travelled in Vietnam, otherwise you can safely choose another novel without worrying about what you may have missed.
